Woo it's Pixie's 5th birthday and we are so excited for her. Since she's my little toothless lap dog, we celebrated with a dog milkshake that she absolutely loved. It's a little over a year since I adopted her and she's changed so much since her 4th birthday. Today's all about Pixie so I thought I would answer some FAQs that we get on her Instagram account.
Why is she toothless?
Pixie comes from a puppy mill. It's an awful place that breeds dogs just for money. The moms and dads of these puppies are treated horribly. and often times a victim of a puppy mill. By the time Pixie's rescue group found her, she was barely fed and all of her teeth were rotten. The vet had to pull out the few teeth that were left.
Why is her jaw crooked?
Though we don't know for sure, our best guess is that some awful breeder burnt her face and broke her jaw and threw her out in the streets. Unfortunately, this isn't rare. This is why we promote adoption because we don't want another mama dog to go through what Pixie did.
If she's toothless, what does she eat?
You will be impressed by Pixie's super strong gums. Her gums can well, gum a lot of things. She surprises me all the time. I feed her soft, wet food which you can read about here and freeze dried treats. On occasion, she likes to chew on some bully sticks. She gets over it after 30 minutes and takes a nap. It's super cute because her tongue tends to extra out after her long gumming sessions.
Does she get along with Daisy and the other dogs?
Yup! Ok, well at least in Pixie's head they are all BFFs. One of the negative effects of a puppy mill is that they have a harder time understanding socialization. At first, I think Pixie thought Daisy and the other dogs were out to get her. Totally not true and their loving nature helped Pixie give some loving back. Pixie used to bark and growl at Daisy when she would get too close to her mouth but now they are totally buddies and Pixie loves taking naps literally on Daisy. It's so freaking precious. As you may have read in Daisy's Birthday Post, Daisy's still a little conflicted mainly because Pixie tends to steal her treats. We are still working on that.
What's Pixie's little quirk?
The more tired she is, the more her tongue sticks out while she sleeps. She just looks so adorable sleeping with her tongue out so sometimes, I give into temptation and give it a little touch. She gives me the stank eye and I whisper that I'm sorry and she goes right back to sleep. Also, when she sneezes, sometimes a little bit of food particle flies out. It's a miracle every time that it somehow lands on me.
What's coming up for year 5 for Pixie?
New merchandise!! As you know, Daisy has amazing merchandise so I wanted something just as cool for Pixie. We are starting with stickers and if the demand is there, we will expand our collection just like Daisy did. Check out her stickers as well as other awesome merchandise here.
We can't believe how much our Instagram account has grown since her 4th birthday and we are so grateful of each and everyone of you. I can't explain how grateful I am to go from 500 likes to 1,500 likes from her 4th birthday to her 5th. My favorite part of all this isn't the likes but comments that I see from young girls saying how much they love Pixie and when they grow up, they want to adopt a toothless dog that needs a home. Though I'm unable to answer every comment anymore, I read every single one and I'm filled with love everyday because of all of you. Because "don't be fooled by the treats that I got, I'm still, I'm still Pixie from the block. Used to have a little, now I have a lot. No matter where I go, I know where I came from (streets of East LA)." Yup, I quoted J-Lo. No shame...ok maybe a little bit but I had to. Thanks for celebrating Pixie's life with us. I hope we bring as much joy to you as you do for us!
