Ever since I was a little girl, I had zero drawing talents. Both my mom and Sheena are great artists. But me, even my stick figures were of questionable quality. I really wanted to create a Pixie shirt but knew that I could not be the girl behind the design. I knew there are a ton of talented artists on Instagram so I decided that I would look there and reach out to artists that I felt was good fit with Pixie. That's where I found Katie Robert's Instagram account @ladiekatie92. I thought her aesthetic and tons of pink was perfect for Pixie's project. Plus she had a dog in her arms and had a feeling she might be obsessed with her dog as much I am with mine. I reached out and she was SO sweet and agreed to do the project with us. She does fantastic custom dog portraits and other creative things that I'm envious about which you can check out here. Not only is Katie and her adorable rescued dog, Molly pretty ladies, but she is very smart. She is a lawyer for the state of California. She's passionate about advocating for those with disabilities and started the association of Law Students for Disability Rights at her Law School. Now, she's helping me help blind dogs in need. So basically she's like the real life Elle Woods.
I asked her the Top 10 things she learned from her rescue dog Molly, David Letterman style and here's what she shared with me.
Today a lady approached my dog Molly and me at the store. She asked me questions about Molly, for example how old she is. I told her that she is about four but I’m not totally sure because she’s a rescue. The woman smiled and told me, “she’s lucky to have found you.” A grin quickly ran across my face as I looked down at Molly and said, “we both are.”
Although technically I may have rescued her—Molly also rescued me. In fact, I think some of the most important life lessons, I have learned from her. Here are the top 10 things I’ve learned from my fluffy, fabulous, four-legged best friend, written through her eyes.
1. If you’re happy and know it—wag your tail. Life is too short to try to play it cool. Don’t be afraid to show someone that you care. With so many acquaintances and strangers we encounter everyday, showing someone how genuinely excited you are to see them can make their day.
2. Stop and smell the roses—even if it’s just to pee on them. Don’t walk past your life—live it. Be present. Appreciate the small wonders of the world like a budding rose, the cool sensation of an ice cube on a hot day, the invigorating feel of the wind blowing through your hair when you drive in the car with the windows down.
3. Shake it off. Literally. Just shake—it feels great to release all that built up tension! Don’t sweat the small stuff. Learn how you can let go of things that aren’t serving you or others.
4. Chase the birds…and your dreams. It doesn’t matter that you’ve never caught a damn pigeon before. Run towards your dreams with all you’ve got and don’t let your past hold you back.
5. Ask and you shall receive. Humans spend so much time beating around the bush. Sometimes you need to just cut through the BS and not be afraid to ask for what you want. You want a neck rub, dinner, to go to the bathroom? Ask for it. What’s the worst that could happen? Someone says no? Then you can move on to the next human who can give you what you want. You won’t know the answer unless you ask the question.
6. (hu)Man’s best friend –be a good friend. Yes, it’s good to ask for what you want and need, but you also need to be good to others. It’s not all about you. We are all fighting our own battles. Sometimes people just need a friend to listen to them and give them a good snuggle.
7. Downward Dog—Take care of your body and mind. You don’t have to go to the gym to take care of your temple. Find something you enjoy doing—chasing squirrels, stretching in the park, jumping on and off the couch. Just get up and move. It will keep you fun, fit and fierce.
8. You can teach an old dog new tricks—don’t be afraid to learn new things. When I was first adopted, I didn’t even know what steps were! I had to learn, slowly, step by step how to climb them. Soon, I was racing up them. Don’t let the fear of the unknown hold you back from trying something new.
9. Sleep on it—Don’t be afraid of rest. We all try to do so much. This “go go go” mentality seems to be programed into us, but listen to your body. If you are tired, take a nap! It will invigorate you so that when you find yourself wrestling your duck toy, you are able to give it your all.
10. Dance like nobody is watching—even though they are, because you’re freakin’ adorable. NOTHING beats a “Molly greeting.” My family calls it my “happy dance” as I dart back and forth, shuffling my little, fluffy, feet in bliss like a cartoon character. It causes the humans to burst into joyful laughter because it’s just too silly and cute. But their laughter is of no concern to me. This is just how I express myself—I just want to wiggle gleefully and if that causes others to smile that’s just an added bonus. Even after I had back surgery, my mom tried warning the nurses before she picked me up about my dance and that I go wild when I see her so that I wouldn’t hurt myself. Even though I was groggy and out of it, I almost jumped out of the nurses arms. Nothing can hold back this wiggle butt.
