Pixie, better known as @toothfairypixie on Instagram is my toothless chihuahua I adopted from NKLA. Lately, I've been getting a lot of questions on Instagram on why she's toothless so I thought I would answer it here.
So why is Pixie a toothless chihuahua? The short version is because she was abused. Let’s start from the beginning. A volunteer from Labs & Friends found Pixie roaming around the streets of Los Angeles. We think that she was a breeding dog used to produce litter for profit. She was probably thrown out in to the streets because she was no longer able to produce puppies. To the breeders, she was just a waste of money to feed because she was no longer profitable. As with any business, the lower the costs of operation, the higher your profits. Well, Pixie was their cost and it can be assumed that she was barely fed and if she was, it was really crappy food.
By the time the lovely ladies of Labs and Friends found her on the streets of LA, most of her teeth were missing and what was left were all rotten. The kind people at the vet decided that it was best that she was toothless.
You may have also noticed that she has a crooked jaw and a pink nose. I think that Pixie’s jaw was broken by the breeder and her face was burnt. This is my assumption and I don’t know for sure. It’s possible she jumped off a table and landed into a fireplace. But knowing my girl, I highly doubt it.
So you might be wondering if she does ok being a toothless dog. The answer is yes but…She’s limited with her food options. She loves freeze dried treats and she’s able to easily eat that. But she’s unable to enjoy a good ol’ bone like any other dog which is a bummer. Also, she can’t play with toys. We don’t play fetch or tug of war because she just can’t.
Do I think that she’s the most adorable thing in the universe when her little pink tongue that matches her little pink nose is out while she naps on my leg and she drools on me. Of course! But do I wish that she was better taken care of so she can enjoy being a dog. Yes! So I ask that you brush your dog’s teeth even if they hate you (Daisy uses this dog teeth wipe) and that you never consider buying a dog because there’s a little Pixie waiting for you at the shelter.
Thanks for reading Pixie's story. It means the world to both of us that so many of her love her just as much as I do. We take great comfort in knowing that there are so many kind people in the world.
PS: Sorry for the absence on the blog. Life happened but I hope to be on track again.
