Pixie’s my first dog that I’m solely responsible for and I was worried how expensive she would be. I think a lot of us are a little afraid of how much a dog can cost on a yearly basis because we know that we would do anything to make them happy. Though I keep a budget every single month, I never calculated the total I spent on her. By the way I use Learnvest which I find to be super user friendly and I love that a female entrepreneur created the site. I’m debating if I want to upgrade to the paid version so if you are a subscriber, let me know how you like it.
Ok back to the main topic. Here is how much I spent on Pixie in the year of 2015.
Vet - $260.37
Hmm, ok so I spent a total of $623.20. Is that a lot!? I had no idea so of course I googled it and this is what google told me. According to this article by investopedia - an average person spends $1,571 for their dog. In their category, they included boarding and vitamins which isn't in mine. I've never had to put Pixie in boarding because I'm lucky enough to have my family to take care of her if I ever go out of town. Also, I don't spend any money on vitamins per se because I give her human food such as flax seed, coconut oil, and apple cider vinegar for the boosts she needs. But they did not have a clothes category and called beauty, grooming, but I'm pretty sure that Pixie would like it to be called beauty so that's what we are going to call it.
Here's the breakdown on Pixie's spending.
Food: Pixie was eating Tiki Dog's canned food for most of the year. I would purchase it either on Petflow or Chewy depending on the specials they were running. She's a 5 pound dog so even though the food is expensive, she doesn't have to be fed a whole lot. Also, I don't think we ever bought her a treat. We are very lucky that Daisy gets free treats a lot because she's so cool like that. We would be gifted (Sheena would call it stealing) from Daisy so shoutout to Daisy and her awesome teefs!
Vet: I took Pixie to the vet twice last year. Once for a routine checkup where she got all the necessary shots she needed and another time because she was acting very drowsy and had a weird lump on her tummy. She just had a minor infection due to hormone issues but that was easily resolved with a shot. Also, she is on flea medication so I included that cost as well.
Clothes: Pixie's a model so I have to buy her some cute clothes. Now this probably isn't exactly "average behavior" but I love dressing her up and she loves it too. Surprisingly, I was never gifted clothes from a brand now that I look back but she did get a couple of collars which is always awesome. I only mention this because I feel like a lot of people assume that "instafamous dogs" are gifted by brands. We did however get gifts from friends for Pixie which I love because my friends and family know how happy it makes me when people get Pixie gifts.
Beauty: Pixie got her nails trimmed 3 times last year. She doesn't get groomed because I don't think she needs it. She just gets a super plain bath with me while she hates life. The $6 is from her shampoo which seems like it will last me another 3 years since she's so small.
Honestly, I thought I had spent more on her last year. I think it's because I'm always buying little stuff for her. If I had an extra $623 last year, I would've travelled somewhere awesome. But every single penny was genuinely worth it unlike that stupid trendy purse I bought and that 5th cocktail that I so did not need so absolutely no regrets. But since Pixie is getting older, I should probably make her do some chores and make her start working because I'm a single mom and it's a struggle.
Do you know how much you spent on your dog last year? I would love to know because I'm nosy like that.
